How to store hardwood logs properly
Kiln-dried wood arrives ready to burn, but poor storage can quickly undo that benefit. The aim is to keep logs protected from rain while allowing air to move around them.
Store your fuel outside in a covered log store, shed with good ventilation or a sheltered area with an open front. Raise the logs off the ground using a pallet, rack or base layer to avoid moisture being drawn up from paving or soil. Keep a gap between the stack and any wall so air can circulate behind it.
Avoid sealing logs inside an airtight plastic container. Trapped moisture can encourage mould and reduce their condition. A breathable cover over the top of the stack is useful, but wrapping all sides tightly is not.
