What Is The Loose Volume?
The loose volume of firewood refers to a natural, random loose pile with larger air gaps in between the logs. Many suppliers already deliver their firewood in this form, such as in builder bags, so therefore it’s the standard way to provide measurements.

What Is The Stacked Volume?
The stacked volume refers to when the firewood is contained as a dense, neat stack with very little space between the logs. The reduction in air gaps makes the shrink by over a third.
Why Do We Quote The Loose Volume?
The main reason we prefer to provide the loose volume, is that other suppliers do the same. It’s easier to compare this in terms of cost per cubic metre, to check the value for money that we’re providing against other competitors.
Additionally, other suppliers sometimes use the external dimensions of the crate, which is inaccurate and makes online measurements difficult to understand. This way, we’re keeping things simple – it gives you a clearer picture of just how much firewood you’re handling once it’s out of the crate.
How To Measure The Stacked & Loose Volumes

STACKED VOL m³:Take the internal volume of the crate (height × width × depth). The volume inside the crate does not include the crate or pallet. Just the firewood stack itself. The closer your logs are stacked, the more you get per cubic metre. |

LOOSE VOL m³:The industry standard for calculating loose volume is 1.67 times the stacked volume, meaning that the volume is 67% larger when the logs become jumbled up. The volume refers to split logs that are 25–30cm in length, which creates more air gaps due to the increased surface area. For example, our full crate's stacked volume is 1.2m³ but has a loose volume of 2m³ when this forms a natural pile. |
Why Don’t We Measure By Weight?
Measuring by weight can be misleading as it doesn’t accurately represent the amount of firewood you’re getting. Weight varies depending on the wood species’ density and on moisture content levels. For instance, a small dumpy bag of logs could weigh more than a large one. Always remember that the drier your firewood gets, the lighter it will be - and the better it will burn.

*The loose volume of firewood is what we are required by the legislation to quote. It refers to the volume of logs if those logs were supplied all jumbled up, or poured ‘loose’ into a container.
This is how bulk firewood has traditionally been sold in the United Kingdom. Supplying firewood in a stacked format is a far more efficient method and allows us to make savings in both the carbon footprint and cost of transport of the product - savings we pass onto you.

Nice hot clean burn , easy to light and producing really nice heat straight away. Better than the logs I was buying from local supermarkets. Crate it came in was well packaged, as was delivered during a period of heavy rain, that kept the logs dry. Will be buying again when I next need to top up the wood stock.

Quality bulk birch firewood. More volume for less money than my previous supplier. There was too much for my log store by a quarter. Delivery was prompt and trouble free
The fulfilment of the order was completed successfully. Logs delivered on a pallet wrapped. Unfortunately your delivery communication could be hugely improved. I had no idea of the date or time of delivery. With a result it was left on my drive as I was out. If I had been notified I would have put them straight undercover with the pallet truck. Now they have been on the drive throughout the storm and rain.

This is the 3rd year I have bought a crate of logs. They are proper hardwood, kiln dried so they burn longer than the gash we used to buy from the forestry lads. Plus, as they are properly dried, our chimney does not soot up. If you are new to a wood burner, yeah, you will find cheaper locally. Give it a shot for a year. Then come back here.

I am still waiting for my order
I changed my usual way of ordering logs this year to making an online order as I saw that I could have a crate that was covered to protect the logs, instead of having logs dropped onto the driveway. It’s much easier to be able to choose when it’s convenient to do the job of storing them and they’re kept dry until then!

I shopped around a lot for logs, as there's a lot of places selling kiln dried logs, and most of the prices are similar. However, I'm so glad I went with Candowe. I made sure that I ticked the box requesting a 7.5 ton truck, but the delivery turned up in an 18 ton truck. This meant that a nearby road was blocked for the duration of the delivery and that I spent time stopping traffic and apologising.

As per title, this was my first time buying logs from Candowe but doubt I would use again. Whilst the standard crate is offered with 4 ‘free’ bags of kindling, they remove half the top layer of logs to fit them into the crate, so 20-30odd logs short…so, not really free! Other suppliers have put them on top of the logs so you’re not getting shorted.
Also, logs were typically thin diameter, with numerous pieces no thicker than the kindling. Ok for oak or slower burning wood, but for faster burning birch, not much more use than fire lighters (and I have my kindling thanks).
I have been waiting 10 days for it to arrive.
No communication as to when it is arriving, not great.
The wood may be amazing but I can’t really comment as it hasn’t arrived yet.
