What Is The Loose Volume?
The loose volume of firewood refers to a natural, random loose pile with larger air gaps in between the logs. Many suppliers already deliver their firewood in this form, such as in builder bags, so therefore it’s the standard way to provide measurements.

What Is The Stacked Volume?
The stacked volume refers to when the firewood is contained as a dense, neat stack with very little space between the logs. The reduction in air gaps makes the shrink by over a third.
Why Do We Quote The Loose Volume?
The main reason we prefer to provide the loose volume, is that other suppliers do the same. It’s easier to compare this in terms of cost per cubic metre, to check the value for money that we’re providing against other competitors.
Additionally, other suppliers sometimes use the external dimensions of the crate, which is inaccurate and makes online measurements difficult to understand. This way, we’re keeping things simple – it gives you a clearer picture of just how much firewood you’re handling once it’s out of the crate.
How To Measure The Stacked & Loose Volumes
 |
STACKED VOL m³:Take the internal volume of the crate (height × width × depth). The volume inside the crate does not include the crate or pallet. Just the firewood stack itself. The closer your logs are stacked, the more you get per cubic metre. |
 |
LOOSE VOL m³:The industry standard for calculating loose volume is 1.67 times the stacked volume, meaning that the volume is 67% larger when the logs become jumbled up. The volume refers to split logs that are 25–30cm in length, which creates more air gaps due to the increased surface area. For example, our full crate's stacked volume is 1.2m³ but has a loose volume of 2m³ when this forms a natural pile. |
Why Don’t We Measure By Weight?
Measuring by weight can be misleading as it doesn’t accurately represent the amount of firewood you’re getting. Weight varies depending on the wood species’ density and on moisture content levels. For instance, a small dumpy bag of logs could weigh more than a large one. Always remember that the drier your firewood gets, the lighter it will be - and the better it will burn.

*The loose volume of firewood is what we are required by the legislation to quote. It refers to the volume of logs if those logs were supplied all jumbled up, or poured ‘loose’ into a container.
This is how bulk firewood has traditionally been sold in the United Kingdom. Supplying firewood in a stacked format is a far more efficient method and allows us to make savings in both the carbon footprint and cost of transport of the product - savings we pass onto you.

Great wood, shocking driver young inexperienced after asking courier to send someone who hadn’t just passed their HGV as our place needs a pro.
Hi Yasmin, thanks for your review. We’re glad you’re happy with the birch logs, but we’re sorry the delivery experience fell short—especially after you’d asked for an experienced driver. We’ll pass your feedback on to the courier and look into what happened.
Delighted
Hi there! We're so glad to hear you're delighted with your purchase. Thanks for your kind words and support!
Ordered the largest crate of Birch.
Cheaper than anyone else.
Delivered without any fuss (I've had many issues with other suppliers)
Very dry wood.
Mix of thicknesses (which I don't mind, as it means we are using more of the tree)
Will be using again!
Hi Andrew, thank you for your fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear you're happy with our birch logs and service. Looking forward to your next order!
I always buy from Candowe..quick delivery and great logs..thanks

Great service and always helpful as driver needs to move crate a good 100 yards to my door.
Hi Eric, thank you for your kind words! We're glad to hear you're happy with our service. If you need anything else, just let us know. Enjoy your logs!
Well priced, thick and thin logs which suite our Swedish wood burner. Our last 3 m3 alder purchase burnt very well . We think this one will be as good.
Hi there, thank you for your lovely review! We're delighted to hear the logs are working well with your stove. Enjoy your cosy fires!
First time I've used Candowe, will definitely use again. The logs were delivered by a helpful and friendly driver, I was impressed with the way the logs were loaded and crated. We have an open fireplace and was concerned the logs may have been to big but there is a good variation of sizes. I have not tried them yet but I am sure they will burn great. Thank you.
I’ve tried several wood supplies. My massive Larch crate has surprised me with superb quality logs, no dross or rubbish hidden in the middle like some suppliers. All delivered efficiently and at a price way below any other supplier for the quantity and quality. Just excellent.
I have to say the logs themselves are grate burn long and hot , I brought the large pallet so should last me through the winter, my only gripe , I was never given any tracking updates , it was only the morning while I was at work that the driver called to say he would be with me in an hour, then a bit of a panic to make sure someone was home to receive them
The logs are overall a little on the thin side, but good quality
Hi there, thank you for your feedback! We're glad you find the logs to be good quality. We'll keep your comments about the size in mind as we continue to improve. Enjoy your fires!
Turned up just a day after ordering. Good quality. Good prices. Will use again.
Hi John, thank you for your kind words! We're delighted to hear you're happy with the prompt service and quality. Looking forward to serving you again!
Neatly packed. Moderately sized cuts so should equal a good stack in the wood store
Hi Alan, thank you for your lovely review! We're glad you’re happy with the quality and packing of the logs. Enjoy your firewood!
Ordered a large birch crate with a £200 saving on full price. Delivery was arranged for a specific date and all was seamless. Logs are dry, smell great and burn well. My only minor complaint is that most logs are thin, with very few larger logs in the crate. Other than that all is good and I’d definitely recommend especially at the sale price
Hi there, thank you for your detailed feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the dry logs and smooth delivery. We'll take your comment about the size variety into account. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to serving you again!
Great logs Great despatch

Great service. Very fast delivery and great logs. Many thanks
Other than a little hiccup with their external transport, which the guys at Candowe dealt with very professionally. I will definitely be buying another extra large crate before xmas
Hi Patrick, thank you for your kind words! We're glad you’re happy with your purchase and appreciate your understanding regarding the transport hiccup. Looking forward to serving you again before Christmas!
The wood is good.. delivery communication is always poor, despite requesting a delivery day and paying the extra couple of pounds was delivered the following day which caused a great deal of annoyance with work etc. The tracking is never updated, just makes the process annoying and for such a large item you kinda know when it is going to be delivered.
Hi Cara-leigh, thank you for your feedback. We're glad you like the wood, but sorry to hear about the delivery issues. We'll look into improving our communication to make the process smoother. Your patience is appreciated!
Great value for money. Logs small, medium and large. It needed 2 people to move the crate securely from the lorry to kerbside. The female driver was lovely.
Hi Anne, thanks so much for your kind words! We're glad you’re happy with the crate and appreciate your feedback on the delivery. Enjoy your logs!
Delivery hasnt arrived yet? I’d suggest sending these post fullfillment…
